Victorville, CA – Senator Scott Wilk, representing the 21st Senate District, is pleased to announce his selection for the 2020 Nonprofit of the Year Award. His 2020 recipient is the Academy for Grassroots Organizations (AcademyGO). AcademyGO Vice President, Debbie Cannon accepted the Senate Resolution recognizing the honor from Senator Wilk.

“Congratulations to AcademyGO on this well-deserved award. If 2020 has taught us anything, it is the importance of California’s nonprofit community to the well-being of so many Californians. I am so pleased to recognize the contributions AcademyGO has made to the Inland Empire this year and for the last 20 years,” said Wilk. “AcademyGO is like a cog in the wheel of organizations and people that provide assistance to residents of the area. It offers training, technical assistance and resources to local nonprofits, volunteers and community organizations as well as promoting collaboration among the different sectors of our volunteer community.”

“We are so very grateful that Senator Wilk chose us for this honor,” stated AcademyGO President/CEO, Vici Nagel. “He is a devoted champion for our region and the nonprofit organizations that serve its residents.  Scott understands that a helping hand can be the difference between struggling and success.  He has focused his legislative priorities on giving a voice to those that need our help including the disability community, the homeless, foster youth and animal rights.  We are proud that he would include our organization in his work to improve his District.”

California Nonprofit of the Year is an opportunity for California’s elected officials to call attention to, and recognize, the good work nonprofits do in our communities. Nonprofits play a tremendous role in California’s social service network and its economy. According to “Causes Count,” a 2019 report commissioned by CalNonprofits, the nonprofit sector is the fourth largest industry in the state, employing more than 1.2 million people and generating more than $273 billion in revenue. The unpaid labor contributed by volunteers at nonprofits is equivalent to 330,000 full-time jobs annually.
