Wilk Calls for Investigation of Illegal Fire Tax

SACRAMENTO – Assemblyman Scott Wilk, R-Santa Clarita, has joined twenty-four of his colleagues by signing a letter that demands Governor Jerry Brown conduct an audit to investigate how CAL FIRE is utilizing the money taken by the State Responsibility Area (SRA) fire tax.

“The burden created by SRA's fire tax is hurting property owners throughout California. The tax dollars brought in by this illegal tax should at least be used for their specified purpose- fighting wildfires,” said Wilk.

It has recently come to light that the State Attorney General authorized a transfer of $3.6 million from CAL FIRE's settlement monies to an outside organization beginning in 2005. The money was spent on several questionable expenditures that have nothing to do with reimbursing the state for firefighting costs.
