SACRAMENTO – Today Assemblyman Scott Wilk, R-Santa Clarita, honored Debbie Thomas of Simi Valley as the Woman of the Year for the 38th Assembly District.
Each year, the Legislative Women's Caucus hosts the Woman of the Year ceremony to celebrate California's extraordinary women. Started in 1987 to help commemorate Women's History Month, the event has become an annual Capitol tradition to salute community service. Honorees are recognized for their outstanding contributions during a special ceremony in the Assembly chambers.
“I'm honored to recognize Debbie for her dedication and commitment to the prosperity of Simi Valley,” Wilk said. “Debbie has been volunteering her time for many years and has continued to leave an impact on the community.”
Debbie is a leader in the Simi Valley community and has devoted her time with the Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce leadership program; the Boys & Girls Club Annual Auction; the Simi Valley Historical Society; and she has been a “First Lady” since 2002 for the Simi Valley Adventist Hospital Foundation's Hats Off to Women, an annual fundraiser that supports the Hospital's Emergency services.
Debbie received the Humanitarian Award in 2012 from the Simi Valley Community Foundation for all of her dedication and volunteerism. She also serves on the Communications and Cultivation Committee for Under One Roof, which is a project to coordinate the availability of local health and human service organizations and to house them in one location.
“I was honored to join the 80 extraordinary women being celebrated today,” Thomas said. “This has been a wonderful experience I will never forget.”
