Letter to Senator Heinrich re: S.771

Dear Senator Heinrich:

On behalf of the 38th Assembly District, I urge you to remove your objections to S. 771 authored by Senator Boxer, D-California, a measure attempting to solve the CEMEX mega mine issue in Santa Clarita Valley. This bill will protect the Santa Clarita Valley from the largest aggregate mine here in America and will save my community from air and water pollution, as well as 700 trucks per day on the already impacted State Route 14.

The Soledad Canyon Settlement Act will require the Bureau of Land Management to cancel the mining contracts held by CEMEX and to not allow mining in the area moving forward. A specified mechanism to cancel the contracts and use the proceeds of selling land already identified for disposal to compensate CEMEX for the canceled contracts will earn the bill a “zero cost” score from the Congressional Budget Office.

This solution is supported by both the City of Santa Clarita and CEMEX. Without this measure, our local economy will be threatened economically and environmentally. Local residents will experience increased truck traffic congestion on State Route 14, ambient air quality will exceed California's clean air standards, and a precipitous drop in real estate value will occur if this mine is permitted.

If you would like to speak directly about this bill and hear about the impact our community will suffer, my staff and I are at your service on this matter.  I can be reached at (661) 286-1565.

Sincerely,

Assemblyman Scott Wilk
