May is National Military Appreciation Month

Thank you to the brave men and women who serve and have served our great country.

National Military Appreciation Month was created in 1999 and is dedicated to honoring the service of all members of the U.S. armed services and their family members who support them. In particular this month is a time for reflection on America’s military history by remembering the wars that created, unified and defined our country and its values.

The California Vietnam Veterans Memorial, located on the grounds of the State Capitol in Sacramento, sums up the sacrifice of our brave soldiers, “All Gave Some, Some Gave All.” Let’s not forget this as we celebrate and reflect on those who have served and given their all for the United States of America. May 1: Loyalty Day – This day provides each American an opportunity to reaffirm belief in the principles the United States represents to our citizens and the world – liberty, justice, and equality.

  • May 8: Victory in Europe Day – In December, 1941 the U.S. entered World War II, turning the war’s tide. Battles continued for three more years, until Germany surrendered to the Allied powers on May 8, 1945, a day called Victory in Europe (VE) Day.

  • May 12: Military Spouse Appreciation Day – It’s often said that U.S. service members never serve alone; their families serve along with them, wherever they go. May 12 commemorates the service and sacrifices that each family member makes in protecting our country.

  • May 20: Armed Forces Day – President Harry Truman designated May 20, 1950 as a day to recognize the contributions of the U.S. armed services to America’s peace and freedom and the strength these services can implement throughout the world as a unified fighting force.

  • May 29: Memorial Day – This day lets us honor those who sacrificed and gave the full measure of devotion to liberty. We should not forget the precious freedom we are so fortunate to enjoy here in America, because of their bravery and sacrifice.
