SACRAMENTO –Today, Assemblyman Scott Wilk, R-Santa Clarita, coauthored a set of bills with Senator Fran Pavley, D-Agoura Hills, and Senator Ben Allen, D-Santa Monica, which will ensure accountability, protect public health and safety and implement best practices to prevent another disaster like the leak at the Aliso Canyon storage facility.
“Too many Porter Ranch families have been displaced and too many parents have concern for their children's health and potential long-term risk,” said Wilk. “It is our responsibility to make sure that once the leak is stopped the cause is identified and new protocols are put in place to ensure no other community has to endure what Porter Ranch residents are experiencing.”
SB 886 will place an immediate moratorium on any new injections of natural gas or any use of vintage wells at the Aliso Canyon storage facility until it is determined by multiple agencies and outside experts that the facility does not pose a risk to public health or safety. This is an urgency measure and will take effect immediately.
SB 887 will strengthen current laws to increase inspections on gas storage facilities. This measure will require more oversight and implement a framework to prevent future disasters.
SB 888 will protect ratepayers from absorbing any costs associated with the leak. This measure will also designate the California Office of Emergency Services as the lead agency for any future leaks similar to Aliso Canyon.
Wilk stated that, “My top priority is to preserve the health and safety or my constituents and to ensure that ratepayers do not foot the bill for the mismanagement of the facility.”
