Victorville – Senator Scott Wilk, representing the 21st Senate District, honored High Desert Homeless Services (HDHS) with his Non-Profit Appreciation Award. Wilk presented HDHS’ Executive Director, Jimmy Waldron with the award at a community celebration.
“Homelessness is one of California’s largest challenges. High Desert Homeless Services has been front and center for over 30 years in Victor Valley’s efforts to help displaced families get back on their feet,” said Wilk. “It is a pleasure to honor the organization, its dedicated employees and volunteers for their excellent work on behalf of those that are struggling in our community.”
HDHS started providing needed services out of thrift store in 1988. It has grown to a facility that provides a safe place to sleep at night, food, and clothing including 24-hour residential services to a maximum of 55 people at one time, for up to 90 days.
The organization invests in the whole person – providing classes, workshops and resources to help people transition back into employment and permanent housing. The stats underscore its success: 85-90% of clients find jobs and 60-70% obtain stable housing upon exiting the program. Recently HDHS started a program focused on the needs of children in its care. It continues to look at the ever-changing face of homelessness in the area and seek solutions to the problems people without shelter often face.
“This is truly an honor, but we couldn’t do it alone. Without amazing community partners like Set Free Church, Victor Valley Rescue Mission, God's Hand Extended and the City of Victorville, we are able to do so much more for folks who are struggling,” said Jimmy Waldron. “Thank you Senator Wilk for this recognition. It is not every day you get honored for just doing what is right.”
