Wilk Honors Simi Valley $5 or Less Bookstore as Small Business of the Month

SACRAMENTO – Assemblyman Scott Wilk, R-Santa Clarita, honored $5 or Less Bookstore as the 38th Assembly District Small Business of the Month. The Small Business of the Month program is designed to highlight and honor small businesses in the community which hire local, give back to local non-profits and promote growth and investment in the community.

“Michelle and the rest of the team at $5 or Less Bookstore have been able to share their passion with the community through their continuous support and involvement,” Wilk said. “It is an honor to recognize such a community oriented business that clearly has an aspiration for improving literacy and encouraging a love of reading for all.”

Michelle Schwabe first opened $5 or Less Bookstore in 2006 and has expanded with three additional stores throughout the region, thus creating 30 new jobs in our community. $5 or Less Bookstore specializes in used and out of print books. Schwabe established a literacy night program which the community can use as a way to raise money for schools, clubs or organizations. $5 or Less Bookstore also offers reading programs for children, open mic night and book clubs. They have also partnered with For the Troops, Simi Valley Senior Center, Susan G. Komen, and many schools in the area for donation needs and literature fulfillment.

“I am flabbergasted and honored to have received the Small Business of the Month award from Assemblyman Scott Wilk,” said owner Michelle Schwabe.  “We have a love for books and it is reflected through every member of our team! On a weekly basis each store sees thousands of titles that find their way into the hands and hearts of book lovers and new readers! The Simi Valley store was the first to open ten years ago, and embraced by its residents. It also filled a need because of the loss of Borders. We happened to be in the right place at the right time.”
