Wilk Introduces Bill to Redirect High-Speed Rail Funds to Education

SACRAMENTO – Today Assemblyman Wilk, R-Santa Clarita, introduced AB 6 to stop the further sale of any bonds for high-speed rail purposes and redirect funds for construction of school facilities for K-12 and higher education.

“The High-Speed Rail boondoggle has been a proven failure and it's time we spend taxpayer dollars in a responsible way. California hasn't passed a school bond since 2006 and there is no more money. Projects are shovel ready and Sacramento must act.” Wilk said. “This bill will help our schools receive the funding they desperately need to improve education facilities.”

AB 6 will give voters the opportunity to halt the sale of bonds sold for high-speed rail purposes as stated to Proposition 1A and would also require the redirection of unspent dollars received from outstanding bonds issued and sold for other high speed rail purposes. This measure would also require the net proceeds of other bonds later issued and sold under the high-speed rail portion of the bond act to be made available to fund construction of school facilities for K-12 and higher education.

“Our students deserve to have well maintained facilities and it is irresponsible to continue prioritizing the crazy train over our schools,” stated Wilk. “The high-speed rail has been struggling to gain speed since voters approved it in 2008 and not a single piece of track has been laid. There are no additional federal funds or any private funds in the works and the price has far surpassed what voters thought was acceptable.”

Adequate school facilitates are vital for our students well-being, and AB 6 will ensure the High-Speed Rail gets left at the station.
