Sacramento Update

The legislative session is in full swing. Committees are meeting and legislation introduced. I have been appointed to serve as the vice chair of both the Senate Committee on Education and the Senate Committee on Agriculture. I have also been appointed to the following standing committees: Budget, Business, Professions and Economic Development and Veterans Affairs.

As your senator, I have particularly enjoyed traveling the district, visiting schools, businesses and public events. In my book, hearing from you is the best way to find out what matters and how government can work to make your life easier. Please visit my website for a list of my key legislative proposals for 2017.

Senate Education Committee

The Senate Education Committee’s oversight hearing on remedial education was of particular interest to me. We are doing a tremendous disservice to our young people when the expectations for graduation from high school do not match what is expected at the college level or in the workforce. This is a major challenge for California and should be addressed.

Unclaimed Property – You may be richer than you think

Right now California is holding almost $7 billion in unclaimed property belonging to individuals and businesses. I want to make sure any money belonging to you goes right back into your pocket. I have coauthored Assembly Bill 772, which would allow the government to use social media as well as newspapers to publish information on how to go about claiming that property.

Every year, the state controller acquires unclaimed property through California’s Unclaimed Property Law, which requires corporations, financial institutions, and insurance companies to annually deliver unclaimed property to the state controller. Savings or checking accounts, stocks, checks and safety deposit box contents are the most common types of property that have been left unclaimed.

In the next few months I will be hosting workshops throughout the district which will walk you through the process of claiming what is yours. Details to follow…

In the meantime, to find out if any of this money belongs to you, please visit www.sco.ca.gov and search the Unclaimed Property Database.

College of the Canyons visits Senator Wilk

College of the Canyons’ Chancellor, Dr. Dianne Van Hook, Vice President Eric Harnish, board members and student representatives, in Sacramento for a conference, came by the office and I took them to the Senate Floor. Always interested in hearing from my local universities and colleges.

Senator Wilk tours the Sand Canyon

Our region has been pelted by devastating storms this winter. Roads have been washed out and mudslides have occurred up and down the state. In no place was that more evident than in Sand Canyon, which was ravaged by the Sand Fire last year. I was able to get a first-hand look at the devastation and will work to make sure this community gets the assistance it needs to rebuild.

Senator Wilk and Assemblyman Lackey

Antelope Valley Board of Trade’s 45th Annual Business Outlook Conference. This was a great conference. Building our local economy is how we build a future for our community. Assemblyman Tom Lackey and I provided an opening welcome video for this great event.
