SACRAMENTO – Today, the California State Senate unanimously approved Senate Bill 1452 (SB 1452), introduced by Senator Scott Wilk, R – Antelope Valley. SB 1452 begins the process to create an official state memorial for those Californians who have fallen fighting in support of the Global War on Terror.
“The Senate’s decision today was an encouraging sign for California’s bravest men and women, their families and friends, that the sacrifices of those who paid the ultimate price may soon be eternally memorialized” said Wilk. “Nearly 800 Californians have given their lives on the battlefields of the Middle East since September 11. This bill is the first step towards creating a memorial to forever recognize these warriors and to display the gratitude we all have for their selfless sacrifice in the name of freedom.”
SB 1452 will create a committee of experts to study the best practices for the development, funding and construction of a War on Terror Memorial in the State Capitol Park. This is the first step in a process that mirrors the successful pathway taken in establishing memorials for Vietnam veterans, firefighters and police.
“Memorializing these brave California heroes is the least we can do and I am proud that the committee has recognized the importance of this step with their votes. There is no denying that these Californians paid the greatest price for us and that their actions are deserving of our highest appreciation, respect and, certainly, of a memorial in our State Capitol Park.”
The bill is supported by statewide veterans groups such as the American Legion, California Association of County Veterans Service Officers, California State Commanders Council and the Military Officers Association of America.
Senate Bill 1452 will now be sent to the Assembly for consideration.
