Wilk's Bill to Honor LA County Sheriff's Deputy Shayne Daniel York Passes Committee Unanimously

SACRAMENTO – Today Assemblyman Wilk's, R-Santa Clarita, bill to honor fallen Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Shayne Daniel York passed out of Assembly Transportation Committee unanimously.

ACR 16 would designate a specified portion of Interstate 5 between Newhall Ranch Road and Hasley Canyon Road in the County of Los Angeles as the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Shayne Daniel York Memorial Highway.

On August 12, 1997 Deputy York and his fiancйe, also a deputy sheriff, were visiting his fiancйe's sister at her hair salon when two gang members stormed the salon, holding the occupants at gun point. As they were robbing the victims in the salon, the gang members discovered Shayne's flat sheriff's badge and shot him in the back of the head. Despite his cooperative actions, Deputy York was executed for being a law enforcement officer. He passed away four days later.

“Deputy York deserves to be remembered for his brave actions during this tragedy, as well as his service to California as a public safety officer,” Wilk said. “In a tribute to memorialize the ultimate sacrifice made by Deputy York, his father requested that a highway be named for him.”
